Current Book Project:
Erstbezug Platte – Stories of Arriving in Leipzig-Grünau
Grünau stands for uplift, upheaval and clichés. We explore the lived experience of people who have made one of Germany’s largest prefab housing estates their home—then and now. Instead of judging Grünau from the outside, we want to hear how residents themselves look at their lives here—with all the facets that make this district special.

The Project
The book offers insight into the stories of people who first got to know the district when they “moved in for the first time”—from those who, as pioneers in the 1970s, moved into the newly built blocks to today’s newcomers. Whether through migration, starting a family, or the conscious decision to return—each point of arrival is part of the story.
This book will become a striking document of its time. It aims to move beyond clichés and create a diverse panorama of arriving, staying and finding home. In 20 in-depth text and photo portraits, we make personal experiences visible and trace how the feeling of life in Grünau has changed.
About us
As editors and makers of the book, we have a personal connection to Grünau.
Oliver Zschau grew up in the district. His parents were among the first residents to move into a newly built apartment as first occupants. This project is therefore a very personal concern for him.
Oliver Niemeier, who also grew up in a prefab estate, has worked as an actor, film distributor and producer and brings a unique feel for giving stories a stage. Together, we will tell the stories behind the concrete.
